Chris Forrester Wins SWAI/LOI Player of the Month for April 2014

St Patrick’s Athletic midfielder Chris Forrester certainly grabbed headlines in April, scoring goals like this against Drogheda United;

His performances for the month have earned him his 2nd SWAI player of the Month award coming exactly 2 years after his first award (April 2012). It is the 38th such award won by a St Patrick’s Athletic player

It means that Pats have won at least one award in each of the last 8 seasons (dating back to March 2007).  Discounting this season, Sligo Rovers are on the next best “run” with at least one award from 2009 to 2013.

It leaves Pats clear in 2nd place for most awards won per club with Bohemians leading the way, even without having won an award in nearly 4 years.

2013 League of Ireland awards wrap up

The final award for the 2013 League of Ireland award was handed out on Sunday with St Patrick’s Athletic’s Killian Brennan picking up the Three sponsored FAI Award for League player of the year.

killer award

It completed a clean sweep of the big 3 awards (PFAI Player OTY, SWAI Personality OTY, FAI Player OTY) for St Patrick’s Athletic, the second time they have done so since the FAI award was introduced in 1993.

In the 22 year history of the FAI award, one club has won all 3 awards half the time with 5 of those trebles as a result of the same player cleaning up all 3.

Award clean sweeps

Brennan joined Pat Fenlon (1999/2000), Jason Byrne (2003) and Gary Twigg (2009) as players who won both the PFAI and FAI, but were pipped for the SWAI award.  In Fenlon and Brennan’s case they were beaten by their club manager. Byrne and Twigg were also beaten to the SWAI by managers but opposition managers in their cases (2003  – Alan Mathews (Longford), 2009 – Liam Buckley (Sporting Fingal).

It’s the 4th year in a row, and the 15th time in 22 awards that the Champions have provided the FAI winner.

Liam Buckley became the 7th man to win the SWAI Personality of the Year award at least twice. Jim McLaughlin is the only man to win the award 3 times.

SWAI Personality of the Year Multiple Winners
3 Jim McLaughlin (Dundalk, Shamrock Rovers, Derry)
2 Johnny Fulham (Shamrock Rovers, Bohemians)
2 Pat Byrne (Shamrock Rovers, Shelbourne)
2 Glen Crowe (Bohemians)
2 Pat Fenlon (Shelbourne)
2 Paul Doolin (UCD, Drogheda United)
2 Liam Buckley (Sporting Fingal, St Patrick’s Athletic)

It meant that managers have won 10 of the last 11 awards, with Bohemian’s Owen Heary in 2008 the only player to break that monopoly.

In the period were all 3 main awards have been given, Shelbourne have won most with 14 with St Pat’s next with 11. A total of 11 clubs have won one of the 3 main awards

93 to 2013

When the PFAI awards for Young Player and First Division Player of the Year, and the SWAI Goalkeeper of the Year are added a total of 24 clubs have won awards in since the first SWAI Personality of the Year award was handed out in 1960/61.

complete awards

Shamrock Rovers, as you’d expect, lead the way with 24. Derry City and Cork City are the only clubs to win all available awards. Bohemians and St Pat’s have not been eligible for the 1st Division award.

PFAI Nominations

The 2013 PFAI Awards were handed on last weekend and St Patrick’s Athletic midfielder Killian Brennan won the Players’ Player of the Year award.  It was his first win, coming from his second nomination. He was previously nominated in 2008 with Bohemians.

Some of those nominated were also nominated before the 2000/01 season (eg Paul Osam who won the award in 1998/99) but records of nominations are hard to come by. If you have them for all years, please get in contact. (I have asked the PFAI but didn’t receive a reply).

5 of the nominees were also nominated for Young POTY in the same year as their senior nomination;

  • 2008 Mark Quigley (lost both awards)
  • 2009 Gary Deegan (lost both awards)
  • 2010 Shaun Williams (won YPOTY)
  • 2012 Richie Towell (won YPOTY), Pat Hoban (lost both awards)

Of the 80 nominations, Barry Ryan’s in 2002/03 is the oldest for an active player. He is one of only 3 goalkeepers nominated for the award in the time frame.

 Position Nominations Players
Defender 17 12
Forward 32 21
Goalkeeper 4 3
Midfield 27 20

No player (in the time frame) has been nominated for POTY while in the First Division. 3 of the nominees had though, been previously nominated for the First Division POTY award (Stuart Byrne in 99/00, Alan Kirby in 00/01 and Ronan Finn in 2009 – Finn was the only winner).

Up until 2012, there were 6 nominees and there have been 4 nominees in the past 2 years. There has been at least one club with multiple nominations in each season (usually from the league winners). The most nominations was 4 for Bohemians in 2008. Unfortunately for them they lost out to 1 of the 2 nominees from St Patrick’s Athletic (Keith Fahey). This season again saw only 2 clubs represented, and again the winner was from St Pats.

More LOI awards. This time the FAI “International” awards

I’ve already posted about the PFAI Player of the Year and the SWAI Personality of the Year. So of course I had to post about the 3rd national award handed out to League of Ireland players, the “National League Player of the Year” award handed out during the FAI International awards.

The youngest of the 3 awards the first FAI award was handed out following the 1992/93 season. The awards ‘celebration night’ date has changed a few times so the years below relate to the footballing season that was honoured, not the year that the award was handed out.  The last two winners moved clubs between the season’s end and the awards being handed out. I’m ‘crediting’ the team that he played with when he ‘earned’ the award.

Full list of winners:

1992/93 Pat Morley Cork City
1993/94 Stephen Geoghegan Shamrock Rovers
1994/95 Liam Coyle Derry City
1995/96 Tony Sheridan Shelbourne
1996/97 Peter Hutton Derry City
1997/98 Colin Hawkins St Patrick’s Athletic
1998/99 Paul Osam St Patrick’s Athletic
1999/2000 Pat Fenlon Shelbourne
2000/01 Glen Crowe Bohemians
2001/02 Glen Crowe Bohemians
2002/03 Kevin Hunt Bohemians
2003 Jason Byrne Shelbourne
2004 Owen Heary Shelbourne
2005 George O’Callaghan Cork City
2006 Ollie Cahill Shelbourne
2007 Dave Mooney Longford Town
2008 Brian Murphy Bohemians
2009 Gary Twigg Shamrock Rovers
2010 Gary Twigg Shamrock Rovers
2011 Pat Sullivan Shamrock Rovers
2012 Jason McGuinness Sligo Rovers

So Jason McGuinness’s win was the first win by a Sligo Rovers player.  It completed a club treble of the main 3 LOI awards with Mark Quigley winning the PFAI award and manager Ian BaraClough winning the SWAI Personality of the Year.  In fact only St Patrick’s Athletic’s Chris Forrester winning PFAI Young Player of the Year stopped Sligo winning all 5 LOI awards as Gary Rogers won the SWAI Goalkeeper of the Year award too. No club has won all 5

Only twice before has a club won all 3 awards with seperate individuals;

  • 2004 – Shelbourne – PFAI; Jason Byrne, SWAI; Pat Fenlon, FAI; Owen Heary
  • 2006 – Shelbourne – PFAI; Joseph Ndo, SWAI; Pat Fenlon, FAI; Ollie Cahill

Only 8 clubs have won the FAI award in its 21 years;

  • 5 – Shelbourne
  • 4 – Bohemians, Shamrock Rovers
  • 2 – Cork City, Derry City, St Patrick’s Athletic
  • 1 – Longford Town, Sligo Rovers

Trivia

  1. Bohs Brian Murphy in 2008 is the only goalkeeper to win any of the 3 main LOI awards.
  2. Dave Mooney is the only player to win one of the main awards in a team that was relegated.
  3. Gary Twigg and Glen Crowe are the only players to win this award twice
  4. Crowe is the all time leader of league awards won with 6.

Only 3 players have won more than 3 awards;

  • 6 – Glen Crowe (2000/01 – all 3, 2001/02 – FAI, 2002/03 – PFAI, SWAI)
  • 5 – Pat Fenlon (1991/92 – PFAI, 1999/2000 – PFAI, FAI, 2004 – SWAI, 2006 – SWAI)
  • 4 – Paul Doolin(1985/86 – PFAI, 1988/89 – PFAI, 2001/02 – SWAI, 2007 – SWAI)
  • All Crowe’s awards as a player, and all with Bohs.
  • Fenlon’s last 2 awards were as manager. All but his first award (with Bohs) were won with Shels
  • Doolin’s 4 awards were won with different clubs; Rovers, Derry, UCD & Drogheda. The last 2 as manager

SWAI awards miscellany

The Soccer Writers Association of Ireland was the first body to start handing out awards for Irish football in 1961, 20 years before the PFAI and 32 years before the FAI.  Unlike, those awards, the SWAI Personality of the Year isn’t limited to players, and recently it’s become harder and harder for players to win. When Sligo Rovers manager Ian Baraclough won over the weekend he became the 9th manager to win the award in the last 10 years.

However, players still lead the overall breakdown of winners;

SWAI POTY Awards won by;

  • Players                                 29
  • Managers                            18
  • Player/Managers             5
  • Admin Staff                        1

*The 5 player/managers are not included in the individual numbers for players & managers

Baraclough became only the 3rd non-Irishman (north or south) to win the award following Paul Cook (Sligo Rovers) in 2010 and Dave Bacuzzi (Cork Hibs) in 1972. All 3 are English. English born Peter Thomas also won the award but he represented Republic of Ireland in goal.

It’s also only the second award for Sligo Rovers after Cook’s win 2 years ago.

Breakdown by club* wins;

  • 11           Shamrock Rovers
  • 7              Bohemians
  • 4              St Patrick’s Athletic, Dundalk, Shelbourne
  • 3              Derry City
  • 2              Athlone, Cork City, Drogheda, Limerick, Waterford, Sligo Rovers,
  • 1              Cork Celtic, Cork Hibs, Drumcondra. Finn Harps, Longford Town, Sporting Fingal, UCD, FAI*

You might have noticed that Admin staff and the FAI have a win.  That’s because in 1964 the Soccer Writers voted for FAI secretary Joe Wickham. He was the first non player to win, and he’s the only non LOI club personnel to win the award.

Liam Buckley’s win in 2009 is the only time a player or manager has won the award following a season in the First Division (Sporting Fingal won the FAI Cup that year).

Interestingly (or not), the SWAI award has exactly mirrored who the PFAI voted onto their Team of Year for goalkeeper. No goalkeeper from Dublin has won the award and there have only been 3 Dublin keepers nominated in the last ten years (Barry Murphy 2005, Darren Quigley 2009, Brendan Clarke 2011)

As ever, any questions ask away and if any SWAI want to share their own info (eg list of old nominees), please get in touch
